GameGirl's top 7 addictive video games

gamepro.com | December 08 2008

Like a hot swashbuckling pirate, GameGirl.com runs down the seven modern games she can't stop playing.

Gaming is great. Many people love it. But what about those games you just can't keep your hands off of? The ones that keep you glued to the screen. The ones that you stay up all night just trying to get in one more level, or one more kill. You know what ones I mean. The addictive games, the ones you just can't wait to get home to play. Here is GameGirl.com's list of the Top 7 Addictive Video Games:

7. Tetris (Various)

Come on admit it, you know you've played the game. Even through the simplicity of this puzzle game, Tetris is an addiction. Almost every gamer has played Tetris at least once in their life. Some played in arcades, others on the Gameboy, some on the PC, on the Xbox 360, or Nintendo DS, it's out there. And many are still loving it. So see what level you can make it to, and maybe even score a Tetris.

6. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

This list would not be complete without Mario on it. Out of all of his games, I have to say Super Mario Brothers 3 for the NES is the most addicting. How many times did I get warp whistles? While playing two player mode, how many times did I steal or get rid of cards I didn't need? From flying to jumping on Goombas to finding secret locations, it's a great game. I would highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't played. Plus they have even added it to the Wii Marketplace for downloading. So let the addiction remain!! :)

5. Halo 3 (Xbox 360)

Bungie created the addiction that has kept people playing for years. The Halo series created a whole new addiction for gamers. Tournaments are held throughout the year at many locations to compete for prizes, and vying for the coveted #1 spot. Halo even started the popular Red vs. Blue series, as well as a collection of books. So whether you root for the Covenant or the Spartans, hop on live and compete against the many gamers in multiplayer. Just watch out, because who knows, your death may just cause a "tea bag".

4. Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360, PS3)

Although it is just my opinion, but Call of Duty 4 has one of the best single-player campaigns in the gaming market. However, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Additional Arcade and multiplayer modes add on to the hours of game play that you already have. Plus COD4 has some of the best online multiplayer out there. So whether you're a rookie or a veteran, Call of Duty has some game play for you.

3. Guitar Hero (Various)

Guitar Hero is one of the biggest music games on the market. I, myself, just recently got into the GH mania. I finally broke down and tried it. Now I love it, and have already bought different additions of the game. Even if you've never played the guitar before, you can have a great time with Guitar Hero. Now it even has the entire band set. So you can have up to 4 players play at the same time. With a wide variety of songs, and four different versions of discs, and downloadable content, it's up to you what songs to play. So grab a guitar and jam out!

2. Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360)

Not only does Gears of War have a great story mode, but now with the new Horde Mode feature. Gears 2 has reached an all new addiction level. You can play with up to four other teams to take on wave after wave of the enemy Locust Horde soldiers. You have plenty of firepower, and of course the famous Lancer, to battle with. And with each wave of enemies adjusting and getting smarter and harder to beat as you progress. Horde Mode alone will keep you up into the early morning hours. So grab your Lancer and let's kill some Locust!

1. World of Warcraft (PC)

Even though I have never played World of Warcraft, it has made the number one spot on my list. Not because of the millions of gamers who are hooked on it. Not because of the celebrities that endorse it. Not because people play for weeks or even months at a time. Not because gamers pay monthly just to log on to play. But because of a combination of all of the above. Heck, even South Park had an entire episode based around the game. Whether you enjoy finding loot, joining a guild, or roaming the vast universe, WoW is an addiction for many gamers. Who knows maybe you'll be next to join the addiction.
